Looking Back at 2015

Published January 20, 2016

We always go about our daily lives without realizing how far we have come. Today is the 20th of January 2016, and I’m still not used to writing 2016 in the date. Go figure! 2015 was full of life–changing experiences, even though I didn’t realize it until I actually wrote some of them down here. But to me, all experiences are consequently life–changing, otherwise what are we doing here? Anyways, here are some of the highlights of my 2015.

I Moved to Italy

Technically I moved late 2014, but since all my stuff arrived in 2015, I’m sticking with 2015. There were a lot of reasons why I finally decided to make the move. In the end, I wanted to be closer to my family, who just moved a few months before I did. I was living in Dubai for the past 4 years or so, trying to get a piece of paper that said I’m a college graduate who is now fit for the “real” world. But after I graduated, I missed my family too darn much! So that wasn’t a very difficult life decision. Or was it?

I Launched 7 Websites

I started collaborating with a good friend of mine Aaliah Al–Aali, a Saudi graphic designer based in Riyadh. The result of that collaboration was 4 coming–soon pages and a complete redesign for Mohammed Hasan Alwan. I also launched a portfolio website for another friend of mine, Sarah Howaidi. Finally, I launched a new web design and development blog Web Design Nomad, a blog where I share news, tips and snippets.

We Got a Cat

He’s a Bengal and we named him Zeytoun, which is Arabic for “Olive”. He was actually one of the strangest cats we’ve ever had. At first, he was extremely terrified and aggressive, but after a few months of trying to make him calm down and feel safe, he is now a very normal cat. We’re all extremely in love with him <3

I Landed my First Job

After months of living in Italy, it was a bit difficult to find a job, especially because I don’t speak Italian. But I found out about a job opening at the Saudi school, which is one of the few IB schools in Rome. The only opening they had was a librarian position, which I had no idea how to do. So I took an IB workshop and got the job! Almost a year later, I’m very happy with the work I’m doing and the people I work with.

I Published 28 Posts on WDN

I published 9 blog posts including one about Web Typography and another about Website Speed Optimization. I also published 19 code snippets including two about random color generators.

I Launched 2 Mini Projects

Being inspired by a nifty tool known as Coolors, I was looking into random color generators, and how to create one. I ended up creating two! One uses PHP, the other uses JavaScript

I Read 11 Books

2015 was the year I decided to read more often, and 11 books in 12 months is a pretty neat accomplishment. Some of my favorite books this year were Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse and The Stranger by Albert Camus. I also started the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, I read 4 of them so far. I’m an official Potterhead now.

I think it’s worth mentioning that I created a little Books section to keep up with my reading list in a more organized way. I guess the next step is writing reviews, but I probably won’t bother since the rating system is good enough for me.

So I guess you can say I had quite a wonderful year #blessed. I look forward to another year where I hope to create more, read more, blog more and have more fun!
